Not the mobs. The victims. While white crowds burned Black neighborhoods in more than twenty-five cities, while Black men were beaten to death four blocks from the White House, while uniformed veterans were lynched in the uniforms they wore fighting for this country — J. Edgar Hoover was building files on Black journalists. He recommended prosecuting W.E.B. Du Bois under the Espionage Act. Not for anything Du Bois had done. For an editorial saying Black soldiers deserved equal rights. The mobs burning the cities got no files. No investigation. In most cities, no arrests at all. They called it a series of race riots. But here's what they don't teach in school: in every single city, only one side started it. Sheriffs stood aside while mobs formed. Police arrested Black men defending their homes and released white men burning them. The Arkansas governor sent U.S. Army troops — not to protect Black sharecroppers being hunted through the Delta, but to suppress them. When it was over, Congress gave speeches about Black radicalism. Not one senator named a single white perpetrator. This is the complete story they buried for a century — the Harlem Hellfighters home from 191 days at the Western Front, disarmed at armory doors while white mobs operated freely; the sharecroppers of Elaine, Arkansas massacred by a combined force of white mobs and the U.S. Army for the sole crime of hiring a lawyer; Hoover spending the next five decades building COINTELPRO on the exact premises he formed in 1919; the Klan growing by 85,000 members that single year because twenty-five cities had just proven that organized racial terror carried almost no legal consequence. But it's not just history. Eugene Williams was seventeen when he drowned at a Chicago beach on July 27, 1919, stoned into the water for crossing an invisible racial line. The officer identified the man who threw the rocks, refused to arrest him, and arrested a Black bystander instead. Thirteen days of violence. Thirty-eight dead. A thousand families burned out. George Stauber was never charged. Eugene Williams has no marker at the beach where he died. The families of the Elaine Massacre are still searching for their dead in unmarked fields in Phillips County. The Army has never acknowledged its role. Twenty-five cities. Eight months. Fewer than a dozen convictions. Zero federal accountability. Zero reparations. And a beach in Chicago with no marker on it. This is not a series of race riots. This is a war America started, won, buried for fifty years, and has never been made to answer for. 🔔 Turn on notifications so you never miss powerful historical documentaries 📋 Sources: Cameron McWhirter, Red Summer (2011) | Grif Stockley, Blood in Their Eyes (2001) | William M.
